4 types of Internet: what you absolutely need to know!

The download

  • Many people only focus on download traffic; it’s the speed at which a file will be transferred to your device. Speed is the first factor to consider. What should be the required speed for your needs?.
  • You pay your bills online, shop around a bit, use your emails, Facebook and other social media, and a little Netflix. Your consumption amounts to a few hours a day. A 10Mbs download (10 Mega octets per second) will be sufficient.
  • You exchange a lot of files and photos on social media, download music and software. You are 2 or more users and have Wi-Fi with several connected devices. A download of 25Mbs (25 Mega octets per second) will be sufficient for you.
  • You play online with or without a PS4 and Xbox, you live to download everything that comes your way or you work from home, exchange large files. A 50Mbs (50 Mega octets per second) download will suit you.

The upload

  • It is the action of transmitting a file to the outside of your device, upstream traffic. This is the most neglected aspect of an internet connection. What should the required speed be for your needs?
  • You pay your bills online, do some shopping, use your emails, Facebook and other social media, and a little Netflix. Your consumption is limited to a few hours a day. A download of more than 1Mbs (1 Mega octets per second) will be sufficient.
  • You exchange a lot of files on social media, download music and software, and there are 2 or more users. A 10Mbs (10Mega octets per second) download will be sufficient.
  • You play online with or without a PS4 and xBox; you can download everything that comes your way and share it on the internet; or you work from home; exchange large files. A minimum 25Mbs download (25Mega octets per second) will be sufficient.

Latency (ping)

Latency is the time it takes for the device on the other side of the world to respond to you. If you have the best download in the world, if you have 50ms (millisecond) of delay before you get a response, you’re not winning. This impacts a lot of online games, stock trading, auction purchases. Latency is caused by poor equipment, lack of bandwidth from the provider, bad routing calculations.

The monthly capacity

  • This is the amount of information you download from the internet to your device. The more you use it, the more you download, the larger the files will be, and the higher your monthly consumption will be.
  • You pay your bills online, do some shopping, use your emails, Facebook and other social media, and a little Netflix. Your consumption is limited to a few hours per day. A 100Gb (100 Gigabyte) download will be sufficient.
  • You exchange a lot of files on social media, download music and software, and there are 2 of you. A 500Gb (500 Gigabyte) download will be sufficient for you.
  • You play online, download a lot, or work from home; you exchange large files. A 1TB (1Tera bit or 1000Gb) download will be sufficient.
